A cutter is a small single-masted vessel carrying a massive gaff sail as a main source of power, however, topsail, topgallant sail, crossjack, and jib, staysail, foresail helped in attaining even greater speed. Additionally, to improve the steering, a short mast with a lug sail was sometimes furnished at the stern. Cutters were mainly tasked to counter smuggling trade, conduct reconnaissance missions, dispatch messages, etc. Relatively heavy armament and a great speed allowed them to fight vessels of similar type and to deter smugglers. HMS Rattlesnake was launched 7 June 1777. When re-registered as a sloop, 12 miles northwest from Le Havre, after a fierce fight on 14 March 1779, she captured a French vessel Frelon de Dunkerque. Her last activity occurred on Lesser Antilles where the cutter wrecked off Trinidad Island on 11 October 1781. 15 cutters – of 7 classes – were built in England in 1763-81.
