The British cutter Alert was launched in 24 june 1777 year. Vessel of such type was used by Royal Navy to patrol voyage tranportation of mail and also against smugglers and corsairs. The first orders direct Alert  on waters of canal La Manche to protect trading ships. Next it has been sent on  western waters of where 18. september 1777 year in area of cape Quessant notice small ship. Commander of Alert lieutenant John Bazely has a dministrated combat rediness and pursuit. It has turned out that  chased vessel was american brig Lexington armed with sixteen four pounder gun and twelve swivel guns and the crew presented eighty four men. Earlier  that ship took part in capture fourteen merchant shipso stocks of and balls were on exhaustion. Alert has managed with his Prize to England and after essential repair it has left on practice patrols. HMS  Alert  has  remained  at  southern  coast  of Portugal since first weeks of january 1778 year. In february in Plymouth Alert’s main armament was replaced with twelve 6 - pounders. In june Alert was included to squadron Admiral Keppel. During carry out routine patrol  duties in company of frigate Arethuza, Alert has met french frigate La Belle Poule and armed Lugger Le Coureur. Heavy and ferocious battle  lasted near five hours. Both of  frigates have experienced heavy damages so that they have receded from battle and they have managed for mother harbours for repairs. Le Coureur and Alert fought board to board shooting  without break for near two hours. At the end after sacrificial defense and one unsuccessful attempt of capture commander of Le Coureur Chevalier De Rosily has been taken along with ship for captivity. For turned out bravery it has been characterized of cross of holy Ludwik. Le Coureur after battle had ten shoots in the part of water line. Alert which were better armed has lost near tenth people, the hull of Alert was damaged in small degree. In july 1778 year Alert remained in Keppel squadron, which flag ship was HMS Victory. 17 july searching for squadron of enemy Alert has been captured from surprising by french frigate “Junion”
