Kampen lighthouse, founded on the red cliff of the Sylt Island, was built in 1856 on the command
of king Frederick VII of Denmark. So-called grey and yellow coloured “Bornholm brick” was used
as a building material. In 1866 Sylt was annexed to Prussia and this island has remained within
the boundaries of Germany until today. In 1875 the tower of the lighthouse was rimmed with seven
steel tapes, with  the  purpose  of  its  reinforcement. Initially, oil light source was used with
such a modern construction that it was presented at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855.
Electricity supply was used in 1929. Since 1953 the tower has been painted black and white.
Kampen lighthouse is recognised as the most beautiful lighthouse of its region and the most favourite
object for visual artists and photographers which they renamed “Lange Christian”.
