Cape Bowling Green lighthouse was built in 1874 on a low sandy spit, about 70 km south of Townsville.
It was a time of intense maritime traffic around Cape Bowling Green, which was associated with increased
production of sugar in the colony of Queensland. For safe navigation, it was therefore decided to raise a lighthouse.
In 1987, after several reconstructions, Cape Bowling Green lighthouse was replaced by a modern automated tower.
The old lighthouse was moved to Darling Harbour in Sydney in 1995, where it is a special "showcase"
at the Australian National Maritime Museum.
