The lighthouse is situated in the hilly part of the German island Hiddensee, which is located in the Baltic Sea.
Built of brick, it has a height of 28 m and was put into use in 1888. In 1927-29 the lighthouse was modified,
and a reinforced concrete shell was added. The light itself is positioned 95 m above sea level and is visible from
about 45 kilometers (25 nautical miles) away. Since 1990, the Stralsund city council has been responsible for the
operation and maintenance of the lighthouse. Dornbusch Lighthouse is shown on the postage stamps issued in 1975
by East German Deutsche Post (GDR). In 2009, Deutsche Post (from reunified Germany) issued a special postage stamp,
which was designed by prof. Johannes Graf from Dortmund.
