The lighthouse, “Roter Sand”, is located in the North Sea, 50 km north of Bremerhaven
and was built between 1880 and 1885. Its construction proceeded with great difficulty,
probably because it was the first lighthouse in the world built directly on the seabed.
The total height of the lighthouse, including its underwater plinth, is 52.5m. During low tide,
up to 1.5m of the plinth platform can be seen above the sea level. The height of the lighthouse
itself is around 29,5 m. “Roter Sand” is seen as a symbol of technological progress, and in 1979
it was declared a monument of national heritage. On November 11, 1982 a fund was established
to save and preserve the lighthouse. From 1990, it was possible to visit the lighthouse museum
on the tug boat “Goliath”, however in 2011 these cruises were terminated.
