Utö lighthouse is located on the island of the same name on the southern shores of Finland.
Utö has been known as a port city since 1600 with the first permanent settlers arriving there in 1740.
Previously, it was a base for fishermen and sealers. The lighthouse already existed before 1700.
In the years 1809-1917 the island was under Russian rule, but by 1918 the Russians had left the island.
Up until 2005, the character of the island was defined by a Finnish military garrison, and now the garrison
building is used as a hotel. Utö is famous for the oldest lighthouses, and the waters surrounding it
with a large number of wrecks.
