The Kalla Islands (Maakalla and Ulkokalla) lie in the Gulf of Bothnia, 20 km west of the city Kalajoki.
These tiny islands (Ulkokalla is 400 meters long and 200 m wide) have their own kind of autonomy
concerning the rules of conduct for fishermen, given by the King of Sweden in 1661.
The Ulkokalla lighthouse was built in 1871, being designed by Axel Hampus Doblströrm `a Axel.
The lighthouse is a round tower with a height of 13 meters.
Today it is completely automated and does not require the presence of a lighthouse keeper.
