The Cape Otway Lighthouse is situated in Cape Otawy in the south of Victoria, Australia.
The Cape was discovered by Europeans when Lieutenant James Grand surveyed the Victorians coast in the vessel Lady Nelson.
The British government  reserved the tip of Cape Otway as the site for the lighthouse.
Consruction of the Cape Otway Lighthouse began in 1846, using stone quarried at the Parker River.
It began operating in 1848 and was the second lighthouse to be bult on maunland  Australia. It is also the oldest surviving
lighthouse on the mainland. Between 1851 and 1932 there were seven ship wrecks along the coast of Cape Otway.
The lighthouse was decommissioned in January 1994, remaining the longest operating lighthouse in Australia.
